By JOHNNY ESFELLER

The Lauderdale Lakes Boyd Anderson Cobras (3-1) traveled to Bradenton looking derail the consensus No. 2 nationally ranked IMG Academy Ascenders’ (5-0) perfect mark. After a scoreless first quarter, QB Kellen Mond notched four total touchdowns to rout the Cobras, 38-0.

The Ascenders got on the board early into the first quarter with a 20-yard field goal from Cooper Graham. On the Ascenders’ next possession, Kellen Mond burst up the middle for a  13-yard blast, his sixth rushing score of the season.

Later in the second quarter, Mond threw the first of three touchdown passes on the night. Tight end Tre McKitty set up the first passing score with an incredible one-handed catch on the left hash-mark midway through the quarter. Five plays later, Mond found WR Emmanuel Greene for a 16-yard touchdown to make it 17-0 prior to halftime.

After the half, Mond found TE Tre McKitty for touchdowns on back-to-back drives if three and one yard, respectively.

The past two games have been resurgent for McKitty. A season ago the Oregon Ducks commit only yielded a single catch for 22-yards on the year. Through the past two games, McKitty has a four touchdown catches, and quickly becoming a go-to player for Mond.

Meanwhile, Mond is one touchdown away from matching the Ascenders single season record for total touchdowns in a season. Last year, QB Shea Patterson, now at Ole Miss, recorded 21 total touchdowns (18 pass, 3 rush). Mond now has 14 passing touchdowns and 6 rushing on the season.

The final scoring play of the game came in the final quarter from reserve QB Zack Annexstad who threaded the needle to WR Jalen Jordan on a 1-yard pass.

The shutout was the first for the Ascenders’ defense since blanking the Southern University Lab School (La.), 42-0, on Oct. 9, 2015.

The Ascenders have a bye week coming up, and will return to action for the homecoming game, coincidentally, against the Southern University Lab School Kittens, of Baton Rouge, La. Kickoff at IMG Academy Stadium is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 PM EST.
