The No. 2 nationally ranked IMG Academy Ascenders (10-0) hosted the St. Frances Academy Panthers (10-2) of Baltimore, Md. Saturday night and cruised to a 38-0 victory, extending their winning streak to 28 consecutive games.
The shutout marks the fifth in the Ascenders’ last six games and haven’t been scored on since the second half of the Jacksonville Trinity Christian game on Oct. 21.
IMG was led by senior quarterback Kellen Mond who wrote himself once again into the record books. The Texas A&M commit added on to his single-season touchdown record with one passing and two rushing scores and now has 36 total in his senior campaign with one game remaining on the schedule.
The Ascenders struck first early and never looked back. Senior defensive end Dante Sparaco’s fumble recovery deep in Panther territory set up a 24-yard rushing touchdown by running back Trey Sanders. Strong defensive efforts from both sides highlighted the rest of the quarter until Kellen Mond connected with fellow senior Manny Greene on a beautiful 33-yard touchdown pass to put IMG up 14-0 with just under two minutes to play in the first.
The score brought Mond’s single-season passing touchdown total to 19, breaking the record held by three different players and most recently set last season by current Ole Miss quarterback Shea Patterson.
Mond went right back to work and converted on an 11-yard quarterback keeper on the first drive of the second quarter to make it 21-0. On IMG’s next offensive possession, senior kicker Cooper Graham converted on a 37-yard field goal attempt to give the Ascenders a 24-0 lead.
Mond picked up his second rushing touchdown of the night on a 10-yard run to put the Ascenders up 31-0 and a commanding lead going into halftime. The rushing touchdown brought Mond’s rushing TD total for the season to 17, breaking current Alabama tailback Bo Scarbrough’s record set in 2013.
The last score of the game came on a Trey Sanders 40-yard rushing touchdown, his second of the night, with just over five minutes left in the third quarter. Key defensive plays in fourth quarter helped the Ascenders notch their fifth shutout of the season.
IMG Academy also celebrated Senior Night in a pregame ceremony and honored the 28 members of the class of 2017.
The Ascenders return to action on Nov. 19 in Virginia Beach, Va. where they will take on Bishop Sullivan Catholic. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.
